Laser Scanning Brings New Asset to Accident Investigations—and Surveyors
Laser Scanning technology is revolutionizing many aspects of surveying and applied measurement, but it's been especially game changing in the rarified niches of forensics and accident investigation. The main strengths of scanning--speed, safety, accuracy, comprehensiveness, and the ability to return to the same data set and make new observations--serve forensic engineers especially well.

3d Scanning Safely and Accurately Collects Data in Dangerous Areas
Some areas are simply too dangerous or difficult to reach through traditional scanning means. Mines containing dangerous gases deep beneath the earth, highways busy with traffic, bridges and skyscrapers located high above the ground present intimidating challenges to any surveyor both in terms of accessibility and safety risk.

Editorial: SPAR 2009 and the Carlson User Conference
The American Surveyor has covered a whole lot of territory since our last issue! As part of a second road trip, I attended both SPAR 2009 conference in Denver and the 2nd Annual Carlson User Conference in Lexington, Kentucky, with a quick trip out to Logan, Utah in between (more on that leg of the journey below). Both conferences were worthwhile, and proved that in spite of the current economy, people are still interested in diversifying and using the down time to train.

Marine Design Firm Sets Sail into New Markets
Among the joys of business are the unexpected directions it can take you. A case in point is Protosys, a product development firm in Portugal, specializing in marine design and reverse engineering. The company is discovering that its powerful reverse-engineering technology is suddenly in high demand by, surprisingly, the archeology community.
